Interestingly, I saw somebody calling Markos Vamvakaris "the Howling Wolf of Greek music" a couple of years ago. A bit backwards, as Markos was recording by 1932... don't really know when the actual HW started.

The real HW started in about 1950, so your Greek chappie beat him to it by quite a while. In America, Blind Blake and Charley Patton were howling by the early 1920s, but I'm sure someone else somewhere beat them to it.
You don't happen to have a recording of Markos Vamvakaris do you, by any chance - I'd like to hear that?
