Mason Douglas Williams (b. August 24, 1938 in Abilene, Texas) is an American guitarist and composer, best known for his popular guitar instrumental "Classical Gas". He is also a multiple Emmy award winning comedy writer, known for his writing on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and Saturday Night Live. He is also an eclectic poet and lyricist, with several published books to his credit.

I used to play that one myself (well, apart from the really hard bit anyway). It's a lovely piece for guitar, but I confess I don't like all the orchestration on that version. I think it sounds better in a stripped arrangement like this one:

Tommy Emmanuel (possibly the most accomplished guitarist in the world) does a very flashy version of it, but I don't really like his either! It's a lovely tune that I think deserves to be played straight without accompaniment.
